Former PM Rajiv Gandhi was in dark about Brasstacks operation

Operation Brasstacks was a major war game of the Indian Army in Rajasthan
New Delhi: Former Union minister Mani Shankar Aiyer has claimed that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was kept in dark about the Operation Brasstacks.
Mr Aiyer in a TV interview claimed that “ the then minister of state for defence, Arun Singh, and the then Army Chief, Gen. Sundarji, had kept Rajiv Gandhi in the dark about the implementation of Operation Brasstacks.”
Mr Aiyer also claimed that “Although Rajiv Gandhi was both Prime Minister and defence minister at the time, he had no knowledge of how Operation Brasstacks was being implemented.”
Operation Brasstacks was a major war game of the Indian Army in Rajasthan, that took place in 1986 until its execution in 1987. Pakistan regarded this as a threat and by 1987, it had put its entire nuclear installations on “high-alert,” and the crisis was heightened.
The TV channel in a media release stated that Mr Aiyar also accepted Natwar Singh’s claims that in 2004 Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi prevented his mother from accepting the prime ministership because he was scared she would be killed.
However, Mr Aiyar maintained that whilst he does not question the veracity of Mr Singh’s revelations, this is only part of the truth and not the full truth.
