Corporators trash ‘litter fine’
Hyderabad: GHMC floor leaders of all parties have demanded a special general body meeting to discuss the indifferent attitude of the GHMC officials in solving civic issues following the civic body announcing activities regarding its litter-free programme in eight zones, which was to take off on Friday.
On Friday, the GHMC staff visited houses, shops and establishments in the eight zones and explained to people about the litter-free programme (schedule and violations).
Hyderabad Mayor Majid Hussain said, “A joint review meeting will be held on Saturday and a decision on litter-free zones will be taken.”
Though no fines were levied on Friday, corporators took strong exception to the orders of GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar to initiate action such as levying fines, booking criminal cases and sending people to jail for throwing garbage on the notified roads. Before implementing such orders, they wanted the commissioner to implement proper sanitation plans by providing the necessary infrastructure.
The corporators criticised the GHMC commissioner over the eight litter-free zones notified in the city and said the notification was a policy matter but the Standing Committee had been kept away from it. The entire 8,000-sqkm area of Greater Hyderabad should be made litter-free, they said.
Floor leaders Singireddy Srinivasa Reddy (TD), Diddi Rambabu (Congress) and Bangari Prakash (BJP) said that garbage was piling up in several parts of the city and was not being lifted for several days, causing un-told hardships to people.
