Tension over vandalised idol; police arrests suspect

Police found man lying in an inebriated state inside the place of worship
Hyderabad: There was tension near Puranapul after an idol was found damaged inside a place of worship causing locals to gather at the place leading to police intervention.
The South Zone Police arrested one person who was found lying inside the place of worship in an inebriated condition. The police suspects that Periya Naik, the man found inside the place of worship, came to steal the idols, but was too drunk to carry out his plan and vandalised the place of worship.
A police team and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incidents. The tension began after the local priest found the vandalised idol and informed locals after 10 pm. A police team reached the spot following the information. Locals, with some political leaders gathered at the spot and started protesting. However, after police arrested the drunk man, the agitators calm down and dispersed
“We found the man lying inside the place of worship in an inebriated condition. He was taken into custody for questioning,” said Hussaini Alam police inspector A. Balaji. He added that the police suspects Naik was the one who damaged the idol.
Police officials said that Naik, who hails from a village in Mahbubnagar, was engaged in petty work in the area. They suspect he consumed liquor and entered the the place of worship after the priest left.
Locals said that previously also, some miscreants under the influence of alcohol broke into the place of worship and stole the idol. South Zone DCP S. Tripathi said that the police has started an investigation regarding the issue. He said that the area remained peaceful and there was no further tension.
Meanwhile, the West Zone police took more than 80 rowdy sheeters, who were previously involved in communal cases, for counselling. West Zone police officials said that the rowdy sheeters were warned not to stir up communal sentiments in areas like Asifnagar and Goshamahal.
