Five crore worth books to be given to school children
Chennai: The workbooks to hone handwriting skills would be given to about 45.76 lakh students studying in class 1 and 7. Nearly 63.18 lakh students, studying from classes 1 to 9, would be provided with drawing books to enhance their talents and imagination and 10 lakh students of class 9 and 10 would be given science records books, all at a cost of Rs 5.10 crore, CM J. Jayalalithaa told the assembly on Wednesday.
Making a suo moto statement, she informed that 1,000 teaching vacancies, including 100 headmaster positions, would be filled up for the proposed 100 government, corporation and municipal high schools that would be upgraded to higher secondary schools.
Also, about Rs 72.90 crore would be spent to construct 1,175 additional classrooms in various government-run schools across the state. About 46,737 non-school going children were admitted into schools across TN in 2013-14 and special training is being imparted to them, she said. Of these, nearly 24,630 were found to be in need of special training and hence, a sum of Rs 22.75 crore had been allotted.
About 9,641 among 24,630 children would be accommodated in residential schooling, while the rest would be given normal training.
Five residential schools would be set up in remote parts of Nilgiris and Krishnagiri districts for the benefit of over 500 children, besides five full-time and three part-time teacher vacancies would be filled up, she said.
