Bus yatra to protest Polavaram project
Hyderabad: A “Chalo Hyderabad” bus yatra will start from Bhadrachalam on August 1 protesting the Polavaram project.
The bus yatra will conclude on August 9 with a “Mahadharna” at Indira Park, coinciding with World Indigenous Day. The dharna is expected to witness more than 2,000 people fighting for the rights of the 2.5 lakh adivasis who will be displaced after the construction of the dam.
“This project will displace 276 villages and 44,574 adivasi families across three districts of Telangana. The government is turning a deaf ear to the issue,” said Sunnam Venkatramana, state coordinator, People Against Polavaram Project. “It will also submerge coal deposits and several hectares of farmland,” he added.
“This was the first topic discussed during the first Cabinet meet of the newly formed Central government. But, later, the party representatives denied discussing this. They are well aware of the fact that their decision is not for the welfare of the people and that they would face opposition from the people for this,” said Professor Haragopal of the School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad.
