1 killed in landslide in Mumbai, MeT forecasts very heavy rains

The district has received 6045.90 mm rainfall in last two months

Mumbai: A six-year-old boy was killed on Thursday in a landslide at suburban Chembur following heavy rainfall lashing the city for last 48 hours, a civic official said.

The boy, a resident of Mahul village near Vashi Naka in Chembur East, was killed on Thursday morning when the hut in which he was sleeping was destroyed in a landslide that occurred in the area, an official of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) said.

The deceased has been identified as Ganesh Kumar Korade, he said.

There were around six hutments of slum dwellers in the area which were destroyed in the mishap. The victims have been shifted to nearby areas by fire officials, he said.

Meanwhile, a fresh alert of "very heavy rainfall" in the city during the next 48 hours has been issued by the India Meteorological Department's regional centre here.

"Mumbai and parts of the neighbouring Thane district along with the Konkan region may witness very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. Since this coincides with the high tide timings, there might be incidents of flooding," said V K Rajeev, Director, weather forecasting of MeT department here.

According to MeT, the southern part of city received 66.7 mm rainfall, while north Mumbai got 174.7 mm downpour in the 48-hour period till 8.30 am on Thursday.

In separate incidents, Incessant rainfall in the town has killed two persons, including a woman, police said on Thursday.

In the first incident, a 20-year-old labourer, identified as Ramesh Yadav was killed and some others were injured when a compound wall of a building collapsed at city's Pathardi-Phata locality on Wednesday, police said.

In another incident, Sunita Chavan, a resident of Talwade-Anjaneri village in Trimbakershwar taluka was washed away by heavy flow of water while she was crossing a road, they said.

Nashik district has recorded 663.30 mm rainfall during past 24-hours, with Igatpuri recording maximum rainfall at 138.00 mm, followed by Trimbakeshwar at 128 mm, Peint 100 mm, Nashik 70.60 mm, the District Magistrate's office said in a statement on Thursday.

The district has received 6045.90 mm rainfall in last two months.

The Ganghapur dam was filled up 75 per cent with present water level capacity of 4215 mcft. Till Thursday, there was total 25,734 mcft water-stock in district's 23 major and medium water reservoirs, it added.
