Centre takes two-pronged plan for SGPC

The Union government may move court once the schedule for Haryana Assembly elections is announced

New Delhi: The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and the Akali Dal government in Punjab have decided to adopt a two-pronged strategy on the contentious issue of Haryana allowing the formation of a separate SGPC in the state.

Sources said the decision comes in wake of newly-appointed Haryana governor Kaptan Singh Solanki having conveyed to the Centre that the Governor’s role in the entire issue was limited since his predecessor Jagannath Pahadia had already cleared the Bill.

The current formula has been suggested by the Punjab Chief Minister only that the Centre should go to court while the Akali Dal, which has significant clout in the SGPC, will approach the Akal Takht, the highest religious body to deal with issues related to the Sikh community.

Sources said the Union government may move court once the schedule for Haryana Assembly elections is announced.

The state is likely to go to polls either in October or November.
