Proposal to set up yard for debris in Hyderabad gathers dust

The civic body had already identified a land quarry site of 10 to 12 acres for this purpose

Hyderabad: The plan to set up a construction and demolition yard to deal with debris and construction waste remains on paper. The civic body had identified 10 to 12 acres of land and proposed to allot Rs 5 crore for this purpose. It is yet to be executed. The GHMC then decided to have a C&D yard following waste being dumped at many places. The civic body was to invite interest from parties following approval from the standing committee.

C&D waste is generated as a result of construction and demolition activities and from building roads, flyovers, bridges and subways. It consists of silt, concrete, plaster, broken bricks and is frequently mixed with municipal solid waste. This makes is it unsuitable for composting or energy recovery.

The civic body had already identified a land quarry site of 10 to 12 acres for this purpose, which it planned to take possession by duly contacting the Hyderabad district collector.

The consultant, Ms IL&FS Environmental Infrastructure and Services Limited, submitted a detailed report to the GHMC suggesting a mechanism for clearing of debris. However, the C&D yard is yet to see the light of day.
