Saharanpur violence: Sikh delegation demands judicial probe
New Delhi: A Sikh delegation, led by Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay, on Wednesday met Union Minister Jitendra Singh and demanded a judicial probe in recent violent clash between two groups in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur.
The delegation handed over a memorandum to Singh, Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office.
It is important that the central government take up the matter and examine possibilities of making the Government of Uttar Pradesh to order a judicial probe by a sitting High Court judge into the riots at Saharanpur on July 26, said the memorandum.
Jitendra Singh gave them a patient hearing and assured them that Government stands for communal harmony and disapproves of the violence against any community.
He said that the government and the Home Ministry have already taken cognizance of the episode and taken necessary steps in the matter.
While the Government has urged upon Uttar Pradesh government to promptly bring the situation under control, Singh also appealed to all sections of society to exercise restrain and called upon different social groups, and community leaders to cooperate in restoring calm.
The delegation included MLA R P Singh, Secretary Delhi BJP Prof Gurmohinder Singh, Secretary Delhi BJP Amarjeet Kaur, Convener Sikh Cell of Delhi BJP Kulwinder Singh and other prominent leaders.
