Telangana state failed on loan waiver, says K Jana Reddy

80 farmers have committed suicide due to loan waiver delay, says Mr Reddy

Hyderabad: Leader of Opposition in Telangana state Assembly K. Jana Reddy on Monday criticised the Telangana State government for not implementing the farmers’ loan waiver scheme even after the kharif season is midway and said that nearly 80 farmers have committed suicide in Telangana due to heavy debts.

Speaking to the media at the CLP office here on Monday, Mr Jana Reddy said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced the scheme but the modalities are yet to be finalised and the Reserve Bank of India is in no mood to concede rescheduling of loans as sought by the government.

He also said that due to the delay in the implementation of the scheme, nearly 80 farmers have committed suicide. “Farmers are in distress and taking extreme steps, as there is no power in most villages and where there is power it is most erratic. The government makes announcements but ground reality is very different. It is high time the Chief Minister initiates some urgent steps and come to the rescue of farmers in Telangana,” Mr Jana Reddy said.

Referring to the Osmania student’s unrest over government decision to regularise contract employees, Mr Jana Reddy said the government should have simultaneously announced fresh job recruitment to pacify the unemployed youth of the state.

Mr Jana Reddy suggested that the government invite the agitating student community for talks and settle the issue amicably.
