Andhra Pradesh starts counting sanders

According to 2007 report, nearly 3 crore red sanders trees were reported across the reserve forests

Tirupati: While the state government is gearing up for the disposal of nearly 5,200 tonnes of red sanders, the forest department has to estimate the growing stock by counting the red sanders trees across the Seshachalam belt.

Chief conservator of forest, Tirupati circle, Ravi Kumar said the exercise of estimating the growing stock of red sanders species has been taken up and would be completed within a month.

According to previous statistical report of 2007, nearly three crore red sanders trees were reported across the reserve forests in the state.

But the numbers definitely have dwindled over the years, due to the extensive smuggling operations as well as the felling of the red sanders.
