Crucial day for Congress: BJP firm on CBI probe into denotification

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s desire was to conduct the session without too many glitches

Bengaluru: The impasse over the denotification of land in Arkavathy layout in the city is not likely to die out soon with the opposition BJP demanding a CBI probe and determined to stall proceedings on Monday when the legislature reconvenes after a break. The ruling Congress and the BJP have been trading charges over the land denotification claiming it was done to garner funds ahead of the recent polls.

The Congress is gearing up to face the challenge by ensuring the passage of crucial bills concerning the finance and other departments through a Guillotine motion. This motion can be used to restrict the time set aside for a debate during the passage of a bill.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, leader of the opposition in the Assembly, Jagadish Shettar said, “We will continue to hold a dharna in the Assembly on Monday too. We will not budge till a CBI probe is ordered into this scam. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has levelled allegations against me, he needs to prove his allegations. Therefore, we will not give in.”

A senior leader in the Congress, on the condition of anonymity, told Deccan Chronicle that they will try their best to placate the BJP and facilitate a smooth debate on crucial bills.

“We are actually in a spot because of the BJP’s stand. If they do not budge from their stance, the very purpose of convening the 30-day legislature session will be defeated. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s desire was to conduct the session without too many glitches. We may adopt the ‘Guillotine motion’ as a last resort to get crucial bills passed,” the source explained.
