Centre tries to defuse Sikh row
Chandigarh/New Delhi: The first indications of an early resolution to the prevailing logjam over the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government’s controversial move to bring a new SGPC Act for the state came on Saturday, with newly-appointed Haryana governor Kaptan Singh Solanki hinting at a review of the Haryana Gurdwara Management Act.
Union home minister Rajnath Singh, acted swiftly on Friday, paving way for Mr Solanki’s appointment at Raj Bhavan hours before UPA appointee Jagannath Pahadia’s term ended on Saturday.
Governor-designate Kaptan Singh Solanki said the Centre’s directive against the legislation “must be obeyed”. Mr Solanki said though his opinion was personal, he would look into all aspects before deciding on the Centre’s directive to annul the Act.
Sources disclosed that back-channel talks are underway as the Centre is not taking any chances of a possible law and order flare-up. BJP leader Shanta Kumar has already held discussions with Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal about the crisis.
On Saturday, there was relief for the Centre after the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, intervened and asked both Punjab and Haryana Sikh leaders to cancel their respective conclaves.
