Telangana School Bus Tragedy: In shock, father took home wrong body

Child believed to be dead found in hospital on his birthday
Hyderabad: Investigating official of the case S.G. Jagadeeshappa said, “On Thursday, Swamy Goud took the body identifying it as his son’s. He even gave a receipt stating that he had received the body. The boy had died in RR Balaji hospital in Kompally. The face of the boy was mutilated in the accident. As both Darshan and Dattu were of the same age and build, wearing identical uniforms and also had similar the holy threads, Swamy Goud got confused and took Dattu’s body thinking it to be Darshan’s. Meanwhile, the parents of Dattu were searching for their son. They went to the hospital, but couldn’t identify their son.”
When Darshan regained consciousness at Yasodha hospital, he began asking the doctors and medical staff about his parents. As he gave details, including his father’s number, the hospital called Mr Goud.
Mr Jagadeeshappa said, “Some of the villagers started expressing doubts due to which parents of both the boys came to Yasodha Hospital at Secunderabad. Darshan identified his father Swamy Goud.
Meanwhile, the revenue authorities, under the supervision of the local MRO, exhumed the body of Dattu at Kistapur and handed it over to his father Veera Babu. They took the body to their village Islampur and buried it again as per their rituals.”
Telangana minister T. Harish Rao said due to “confusion” the body had been handed over to the wrong parents. “Mr Swamy Goud, father of Darshan Goud, failed to identify his son’s body correctly and took another instead. The mistake has been rectified now. Mr Goud was in a state of shock on Thursday after signing the papers and took the body of one Dattu who had died in the mishap,” he said.
Dattu’s father, Mr Veera Babu said, “My daughter Bhuvana also died in the accident. I presumed that my son was alive and was being treated somewhere in a hospital. I took my daughter’s body for burial. On Thursday night, after burying my daughter I came to Secunderabad and checked the hospital and couldn’t find my son. Though I thought that my son might have been alive, he too died like his sister.”
Meanwhile parents of Darshan expressed happiness that their son was alive. Mr Swamy Goud said, “It’s his birthday today. It’s a rebirth for him. We were mistaken yesterday. On Thursday, around 9.30 am, we received a phone call about the mishap. They told me that my son had died and I went searching at the hospital. I searched for him at the mortuaries too. Later I fainted and was not in a position to search more. Police had shown me a body with a disfigured face. In a state of shock, I took the body home. I feel very bad for the other family.”
