Fishermen to get sat gadgets for Rs 52 crore
The new equipment will be provided to fishermen before March 2015
Chennai: To ensure sea safety, wireless communication systems would be provided to all TN fishermen at a cost of Rs 52 crore, state fisheries minister K.A. Jeyapal informed the assembly on Friday.
This is a World Bank project, and the new equipment will be provided to fishermen before March 2015. Pointing out that the AIADMK government was concerned about TN fishermen, the minister emphasised that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had written 48 letters to the Centre, seeking its intervention whenever fishermen were apprehended by the Sri Lankan navy and said that state government will provide bio metric ID cards to 1.90 lakh women dependent on fishing and related activities, to help them avail government benefits.
On the proposed world class oceanarium at Mamallapuram, he said that a study report in this regard will be tabled by October and the facility, on completion, will house exhibits including the whale shark.
He also said that technical studies would be taken up to establish new fishing harbours near Chennai-Ennore, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam districts. Similarly the state has accorded administrative sanction for constructing fishing harbours at Colachel and Thengaipatinam, both in, Kanyakumari district, on a 50-50 share basis between the state and centre.
Mr Jeyapal also proposed overseas training for fisheries department officials to know about the latest techniques in fishing and said that rivers in coastal districts had been identified for widening.
