Can’t spare officers: Centre to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana
Hyderabad: The Telangana and AP governments are worried over the Centre notifying lesser than required IAS/IPS posts for both the states. AP needs 270 IAS and 180 IPS officers but the Centre has notified just 211 IAS and 144 IPS posts.
Similarly for Telangana there is a need for 190 IAS and 175 IPS officers but the Centre has notified only 163 IAS and 112 IPS posts. In the secretariat itself, there is a need for 160 IAS officers for both the states. Both governments have been forced to allot at least three departments to each officer due to the shortage, which the IAS officers are strongly opposing citing heavy workload.
Both governments have directed their chief secretaries to take up the issue with the Centre. Telangana chief secretary Dr Rajiv Sharma and his AP counterpart, Mr I.Y.R. Krishna Rao are expected to meet Union Home ministry officials on July 25 in New Delhi and seek additional IAS/IPS officers keeping in view the formation of the two new states and the need to put the administrative mechanism in place, which was affected due to the bifurcation of the state.
What has been a major worrying factor for both the states is that the actual number of officers allotted will be fewer than the posts notified. When the notified posts themselves are lesser in number, lowering the number of officers during allotment will be a major challenge for both the states. In united AP, the Centre had notified 367 IAS posts, but only 290 were filled. Of them, 68 IAS officers used to work in the secretariat though there was a need for 77 officers.
Chief secretary P.K. Mohanty had written to the Centre seeking an additional 45 IAS posts for united AP. However, it did not materialise as the Centre said that many other states were also facing shortage of IAS officers.
