Sonia Gandhi to take corrective steps after Lok Sabha debacle

Shashi Tharoor said it won’t be ‘business as usual’ in the Congress after LS defeat

New Delhi: While the rank and file in the Congress is confident that Mrs Sonia Gandhi alone can revive the party from the historic defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, members of the Team Rahul are trying to tighten their grip over the organisation.

Mrs Gandhi is yet to take “corrective steps” after the debacle indicating that she does not want to take action against any body and thus trying to keep the party united, but Mr Rahul Gandhi has been backing the party chief ministers despite their failure to deliver in the general election the party fought under his leadership.

Members of the Team Rahul in the AICC and in states have failed completely. They have disconnected from the people and have been ineffective in the ground as seen in the Lok Sabha elections and earlier in the state Assembly polls.

Mrs Gandhi had brought the Congress back to power after the successive defeats in 1996, 1998 and 1999 Lok Sabha polls. She had shown flexibility in allying with those who quit the Congress like the NCP, the Trinamul Congress and made the DMK, Left, Samajwadi Party, BSP friends after making it clear that she was not the prime ministerial candidate.

She had made friends and formed a Front against the BJP. But the Team Rahul got power on platter, without struggle.

Meanwhile, former Union minister Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said it won’t be “business as usual” in the Congress after the severe drubbing in the elections and Mrs Sonia Gandhi would soon fix accountability and take decisions on revamping the party.

The decisions will be taken as per her own analysis and that of the A.K. Antony Committee report, he said.

Mr Tharoor, who is also a Congress spokesperson, said only Mrs Gandhi would be able to steer the party out of this crisis as she has seen two election losses in a row and two consecutive wins under her command.
