Chidambaram: The police Wednesday arrested a 27-year-old woman for murdering a sub-inspector of police attached to the Annamalai Nagar police station at his rented house here on Tuesday night.
The accused, Vanitha of Chidambaram, was arrested when she reached Parangipettai on a government bus. She confessed to the crime. Police sources said the victim, P. Ganesan (32), who joined the police force as sub-inspector in 2011, was posted at Killai police station, near Chidambaram, in 2012.
Ganesan was transferred to Annamalai Nagar police station in 2013 after he was accused of having an illicit relationship with Vanitha who had approached him to lodge a complaint against her husband Kalaimani.
Police sources said Ganesan was subsequently transferred to Ramanatham police station following which he went on medical leave for a month. On July 9, he married Sathya from Villupuram and moved into a rented house at Chakra Avenue here. Sathya had left for her mother’s house in Villupuram for Aadi on July 17.
However, Ganesan, who was on leave, continued his relationship with Vanitha and promised to marry her. Vanitha, who came to know about Ganesan’s marriage with Sathya, planned to eliminate him. She brought a knife from Puducherry and went to Ganesan’s rented house on Tuesday night.
The duo consumed liquor and food. Vanitha suddenly pulled out the knife and slit Ganesan’s throat and stabbed him several times, resulting in his instantaneous death. Vanitha later fled the scene.
When Ganesan’s wife Sathya called him on Tuesday night, two of his mobile phones were switched off. Sensing something amiss, Sathya asked her relative Manikandan to check on him.
When Manikandan came to the flat and looked through the window he was shocked to find Ganesan lying in a pool of blood. Meanwhile, the police arrested Vanitha while she attempted to flee to Salem on a government bus at Parangipettai. She was produced before a local court and remanded in custody.
