Query to Kerala on extending Higher Secondary Schools lunch break duration
Govt had changed the working days into five-day week for higher secondary schools
Kochi: Kerala High Court on Wednesday asked the state to submit whether it can increase the lunch interval time of higher secondary schools from 35 minutes and also provide an extra interval in the post-lunch session.
Justice P.N. Ravindran asked the state to reply within two weeks. The court was considering a plea filed by Sunil Koparath of Thiruvalla, who is also the president of the Parents-Teachers Association of Balikamadam higher secondary school.
From July 1, 2014, the government had changed the working days into five-day week for higher secondary schools with ten periods from 9 a.m. to 4. 30 p.m. with two intervals of five minutes’ duration each and a lunch interval of 35 minutes. The timing in the school earlier was from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with lunch break of one hour.
The petitioner argued that the five-minute intervals were too meagre for students. “As the time is very short, the students are not even taking sufficient water required by them. It will adversely affect their memory, attention and overall intellectual development,” the petitioner contended.
He sought a directive to the government to study the matter by appointing another committee consisting of medical experts and taking the opinion of parents and students. He also sought a directive to implement the order only after conducting a study by the committee.
