Vibgyor school rape case: Damned in Daman; bailed in Bengaluru

Vibgyor High school head Rustom Kerawalla arrested for tampering with evidence

Bengaluru: Responding to the demand of anguished parents and the ongoing protests against the alleged rape of a six-year-old in the grounds of international school, Vibgyor High , the city police arrested its founder chairman and president, Rustom Kerawalla in Daman Tuesday night.

Brought to Bengaluru from Daman on a 5.30 am flight, he was produced before the magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. The chairman , who heads more than 20 such schools around the country, was on the run after massive protests rocked the city and reportedly evaded the police by changing his mobile numbers.

“Rustom has been booked under section 201 of the IPC for destruction of evidence, section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act for delay in reporting a crime against a child and section 23 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for exposing the child to such a cruelty, failure to protect it and negligence,” police commissioner, M.N. Reddi.
Kerawalla was later let off on conditional bail.

A skating instructor of the school has been accused of raping the little girl in the premises of Vibgyor High located in Bengaluru East, Marathahalli, Varthur on July 2. The girl’s parents lodged a police complaint on July 14. “There was no delay in police investigations or the arrest. We left no stone unturned but you cannot do justice to a job if it’s done in a hurry, ” said Mr Reddi. Asked about the second accused in the case who is still absconding, he said, “We are probing the possible involvement of other staff members, but will not be able to divulge any details as the matter is still being investigated.”
