17 innovations lined up for national contest

9th edition of TechTop 2014 to be held at Mar Baselios College of Engineering
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 17 innovative products ranging from a fabric that generates electrical energy to an upper limb exoskeleton for rehabilitation and power augmentation developed by students of various engineering colleges, including IITs, across the country, have been shortlisted for the ninth edition of the national innovation contest, TechTop 2014, to be held at Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology here, on July 25 and 26.
The theme of TechTop 2014 is ‘Improving the lives of our rural population by application of technology’. From the 192 projects submitted, 76 were initially shortlisted. Seventeen in the final round will compete for the coveted cash price of Rs 1 lakh sponsored by Decree Controls, said TechTop Charitable Trust managing trustee Rajesh Nair.
Special shoes to monitor the health of premature babies, solar powered protection device from being electrocuted, solar panel working on slaughter house waste, smart wearable device to help women in distress, communication aid for the motion impaired, ultra fast battery charger, wheel chairs for the physically challenged, portable solar water heaters, tree climbing machine, affordable refreshable Braille display, low-cost waste water treatment system, automatic pesticide and insecticide sprayer and crankshaft-less system for I.C. engine are the innovative products to be presented.
TechTop will be open to school and college students on July 25 and to the general public on 26. Winners will be announced during the valedictory session on the 26th.
