Bengaluru simmers, protests continue over minor girl rape case

City witnesses protests in several areas against spate of rapes

Bengaluru: Bengaluru is still seething over the recent rape of a six-year-old on school premises and public fury remains unabated. On Tuesday, the city witnessed protests at Town Hall, Frazer Town, and Miller’s Road.

Around 3000 students from Mount Carmel College took to the streets on Tuesday morning to protest against the spate of rapes taking place in the city. The silent march began from Mount Carmel College, went past Sophia High School on Palace Road and past the MCC stadium on Miller's Road before returning to the campus.

The principal, Sr Arpana, along with the deans from various departments, visited the office of the Commissioner to submit a petition suggesting harsher punishment for sexual predators and the mobilizing of fast track courts.

“We wanted to create awareness about respecting women,” said Sr Arpana. “With the way things are going, women need to defend each other.” In another demonstration, hundreds of angry protestors from BJP marched towards Vidhan Soudha expressing their anger over the blatant failure of law and order in the city under the leadership of K S Eshwarappa, B S Yeddyurappa, R Ashok, Jagdish Shettar and P C Mohan.

The BJP leaders demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister K J George. The police intercepted the protesters who were marching from Sheshadri road to Vidhan Soudha and detained K S Eshwarappa and B S Yeddyurappa along with hundreds of protesters.

In yet another show of outrage, members of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti staged a protest by beating drums against the recent rape incidents which occurred across the State. The protest was held in front of Mysore Bank Circle in Bangalore on Tuesday.
