Round-table on development of backward to be held in Telangana

Objective is to identify current fault lines in Telangana; assess past experience

Hyderabad: Dr M Channa Reddy Memorial Trust will organise a round table on 'Development of Backward and Remote Areas of Telangana: A Way Forward' here on July 26.

The objective is to identify the current fault lines in Telangana; assess past experience; and suggest the way forward to help the state government plan for ushering rapid socio-economic development of the backward and remote areas of Telangana, trust's secretary Marri Shashidhar Reddy said in a statement.

"While we are sure that the State government will evolve its plans, we felt that it would be appropriate for the Trust, to do some brainstorming on this subject," he said.

Reddy said several eminent personalities from different fields would participate in the event.

In recent years, he said, there have been efforts by successive governments of the Andhra Pradesh to address the development needs of the people of the backward and remote areas, which included setting-up of Remote and Interior Areas Development Programme (RIAD) in 2005 and the Commission for Development of Backward Areas of Andhra Pradesh in 2008.

"Even after the relevant bill was enacted in the State assembly, the Commission remained a total non-starter, without even being constituted, or, in fact, the very existence of such an enactment being not known to even the otherwise well-informed," Reddy said.
