Hyderabad's new master plan to cover 30 million people
Hyderabad: The new Master Plan envisages carrying 30 million citizens (three times the present population) to the peripheral areas (beyond LB Nagar, Kukatpally, Uppal, Kapra) of the city.
The 2,000 new colonies in and around the core area that lack infrastructure will be given a face-lift. Designated education, healthcare and recreational facilities will be created.
Sources said that the GHMC was aiming not to copy the master plans of any other city, but to float tenders inviting consultants for a detailed study of core and non-core areas.
The planning, sanction and implementation will take two decades. Hyderabad is one among the fastest growing metropolitan cities, considering its area. Twenty years ago the geographical area of Hyderabad was around 300-400 square kilometers.

However in future it will grow four times and this expanded area will accommodate the future generation.
A master plan can be for an existing developed city or for a city that needs to start from scratch like Raipur and Chhattisgarh.
Urban planning expert S.P. Shourie said, “A master plan estimates how much land is required for industrial, commercial and residential purposes. It is a combined effort by the government and people. A master plan should be planned in such a manner that it will tell you where new roads, parks, entertainment, education zones should be set up. A physical configuration should be designed first, the plan should also introduce strict building regulations, sewerage system, dumping zones, health and sanitation of the city. If the funds can be raised from the city itself through various industries then the master plan can be implemented at the earliest. Urban development experts say that the master plan should be followed in a disciplined manner. For example, one cannot encroach on land desig-ned for a park.”
