Congress rebels snubbed by Rahul Gandhi, 2 dissident ministers in Assam
Rahul Gandhi appears firm on backing the party’s embattled Chief Ministers
New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi appears firm on backing the party’s embattled Chief Ministers, Tarun Gogoi in Assam, Prithviraj Chavan in Maharashtra and Bhupinder Singh Hooda in Haryana who have been facing a growing rebellion following the party’s rout in the Lok Sabha elections.
Sources said while Congress president Sonia Gandhi was prepared to consider replacing Mr Chavan after realising he will find it difficult to deliver in the coming Assembly polls in Maharashtra, her son Rahul insisted he should continue and lead the electoral battle from the front.
In Assam, the AICC had sent senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge to Guwahati to elicit the views of party MLAs on a change of guard in the state after growing dissension against Mr Gogoi. Mr Kharge submitted his report to the high command, but no “corrective steps” have been taken yet. On the contrary, the AICC has ruled out a change of leadership in Assam now, saying the CM had “national stature” and that there was no hurry as the state polls will only be held in 2016.
Some party insiders claim that the Congress is still strong in Assam and any hurried decision could be counter-productive as the BJP had emerged as a major force in that state.
