Cameron tells Putin his ‘cronies’ will be target

Cameron vented his fury at Russia’s obstruction in a 30-minute phone call with Mr Putin

London: The EU is ready to toughen sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine plane disaster, British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Monday, indicating that it could target whole sectors of the economy including goods with possible military uses.

European Union foreign ministers meet on Tuesday to decide whether to broaden sanctions if President Vladimir Putin does not press Ukraine’s pro-Kremlin separatists to allow access to the crash site, and reduce Moscow’s support for the rebels. The sanctions imposed so far are seen as soft.

A report in Daily Mail said Mr Cameron warned Mr Putin his billionaire “cronies” will have their assets frozen in London.

Mr Cameron vented his fury at Russia’s obstruction in a 30-minute phone call with Mr Putin.

Downing Street refused to comment on exactly which individuals would be targeted, but there is speculation it could eventually include well-known figures such as Roman Abramovich, who has close links to the Putin regime.
