The girl who remembers it all

Niraja was invited by the Chhattisgarh government to demonstrate her talent

Hyderabad: Six-year-old Niraja Nidhi Gupta’s memory is phenomenal. Ask her about any constituency in the state and she’ll tell you the MP, MLA and the district collector’s names. The list just goes on...

At the age of two, Niraja was abandoned by her father as she was a “girl”. Now, she is being brought up by her mother Pavani Gupta and maternal grandfather, Narayana Gupta. The family manages her school fees and monthly expenses with the Rs 5,000 that her mother earns as a teacher and a little extra from her grandfather’s tuitions.

The grandfather is now looking for someone who can sponsor Niraja’s education.

The Class II student of Bhagyanagar Public School, was recently invited by Chhattisgarh Chief minister Raman Singh, as part of their Bala Kanya Kalyan programme. “The CM had seen her clipping on TV. At Raipur, she was taken to 14 schools, where she demonstrated her talent”.

“The CM promised that he would provide us with shelter, pay Rs 1,500 as pension every month and sponsor her education in any school that we chose, provided we shifted to Raipur. When I asked him if he could arrange the same in Hyderabad, he said he would have to check. I am still waiting for his help,” says Narayana.

It was during a morning walk when Narayana realised that his granddaughter is a fast-learner. “She remembered the word ‘pit’, which I had mentioned a day before. So, I started teaching her about states and the capitals during these walks,” he adds.

Niraja wants to become “India’s president” one day.
