Tirupati: Renigunta police who have stepped up the vigil along the Chittoor-Kadapa borders and other parts of Renigunta and Yerpedu mandals seized red sanders logs worth Rs 15 lakh being smuggled out of the district on Sunday. According to Renigunta DSP B. Srinivas, the Renigunta cops acted on a tip off and were conducting searches on the Srikalahasti-Naidupet highway.
The cops who chased the truck with a Karnataka state registration brought the vehicle to a grinding halt at a distance. The police seized 25 red sanders logs weighing around 710 kgs and the truck used for transporting the red sanders contraband. While the official worth of the seized goods is put around Rs 15 lakhs, the worth of the red sanders logs alone in the international market is anywhere close to Rs 30 lakhs.
Two persons K Dharmaraj and R Devarajan were also taken into custody by the police. According to Renigunta police the truck laden with red sanders logs were being smuggled out of the district to Tamil Nadu. The contraband along with the vehicle has been shifted to the Renigunta police and the Yerpedu police have registered a case against the two persons arrested.
