Bengaluru school rape case: Anger rising among parents
March through city flashing placards, chanting anti-government slogans
Bengaluru: The city police’ top brass got a taste of the anger of the people on Saturday as hundreds and thousands, mostly parents of children no older than the six year old rape victim and student of Vibgyor High School, marched through a city suburb, flashing placards, chanting anti-government slogans and demanding police nab the culprits. Some 5,000 people marched from the Kundalahalli gate where the Vibgyor School is located to HAL police station grounds, near the old HAL Airport on Saturday morning.
The protesters squatted outside the station, refusing to leave until the city police commissioner heard them out in the third day of back to back protests that began after the heinous rape of a six-year-old girl and police forcing her to visit the rape spot twice.
The parents, angered by police inaction, had laid siege to the school after it arbitrarily shut the facility, refusing to accept responsibility for the crime committed on its premises. Saturday's march snowballed into a mega march as hundreds joined the furious parents, who warned police that if their demands were not met, they would block city roads.
It was under immense public pressure, that forced Raghavendra H. Auradkar, the city police commissioner, to come to HAL police ground to address the angry protestors. Parents handed over a 40-point memorandum to Auradkar who assured parents a thorough investigation was underway and stringent action would be taken once the perpetrators were caught. He left quickly after he failed to assuage the anger of the crowd, leaving additional commissioner Kamal Pant to cool rising tempers.
