Five newborns babies die at KIMS, parents furious

Parents accused doctors of negligence

Hubli: The deaths of five newborn babies at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Sunday night has kicked off a row with the parents accusing the doctors of negligence and the hospital authorities ordering an inquiry into them.

The doctors, however, claim the babies could not be saved as the mothers were in a critical condition, suffering from various ailments including high blood pressure and excessive bleeding.

The five pregnant women from Dharwad, Haveri and Belgaum districts were admitted to the hospital on Sunday, but their babies died soon after birth.

While the parents accuse the doctors of not treating them promptly, the doctors claim the babies were under weight. “We took good care of the pregnant mothers who were admitted to the hospital in critical condition. One of the mothers was HIV positive. The child mortality rate in the hospital is around 30 per 1,000 as against the national average of 48 to 50,” said KIMS paediatrician, Dr Prakash Wari, pointing out that the hospital caters to a large number of poor patients from various parts of North Karnataka.

“I have sought an explanation for the deaths of the newborn babies at the hospital and ordered an inquiry as well. As KIMS was built over five decades ago it does not have enough room to cater to the needs of the growing population of patients. A 350-bed hospital is now under construction in the campus exclusively for the treatment of mothers and children and we hope this will help things,” said KIMS director, Dr U.S. Hangaraga when contacted by Deccan Chronicle.
