Hyderabad: 40 kids beaten in Don Bosco High School for not speaking in English

Parents protest at school, teacher suspended

Hyderabad: About 40 Class V students of Don Bosco High School, Erragadda were allegedly beaten with a stick by their teacher on Tuesday for not speaking in English.

Parents got agitated over this and protested in the school. The teacher allegedly told the students not to come to the school till they learn to speak in English.

The school rule mandates students to speak only in English in the English period. Those who violate the rule are asked to pay a fine of Rs 5.

The English teacher, identified as Tanuja, found the students speaking in Telugu and beat them with a stick. The students in turn complained to their parents when they came to pick them up. The students also started protesting in the school campus and one of them even called the police to lodge a complaint.

However, no case was booked by the local police. As the teacher left the school by then, the principal asked parents to return the next day to discuss the issue.

The State Council for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) took suo motu cognisance of the punishment and issued notices to the teacher, school management and District Education Officer.

The latter and the school management couldn’t be reached for comment.
