Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao looks to hydel electricity

CM directed officials to identify locations to set up hydel-power generation plant

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday asked the Telangana Genco officials to step up efforts to produce 6,000 MW of power to overcome the power shortage in the state. Officials told Mr Rao that at present, only 4,400 MW of power was available for T-state, though the demand is for 7,000 MW.

The CM directed officials to identify suitable locations to set up hydel-power generation plants, besides pursuing the case with the Centre on the setting up a 4,000-MW NTPC plant at Kothagudem, as promised in the AP Reorganisation Bill-2014.

The CM said Telangana has the capacity to produce 5,000 MW of hydel-power, if effective polices are framed and executed. As a temporary relief, he asked officials to purchase 2,000 MW of power from Chhattisgarh and set up dedicated lines from there to T-state for supply of power.

Mr Rao asked officials to procure 1500 MW coming from the North Grid to the South Grid through Warda-Dichpally power line.

He also told officials to take up extensive survey of all the rivers, especially Krishna, Godavari, Pranahitha, Penganga, Manjeera etc. to explore the opportunities for enhancing hydel-power generation.

He said the state should try to achieve 20,000 MW of power production within three years. He also asked officials to check land availability near Manuguru and Illendu in Khammam district to set up new power plants.

He said there is scope for further generation of hydel-power at Jurala project which needs immediate attention.
