Delhi gangrape: Supreme Court stays hanging of two rapists

The court had earlier stayed the execution of two other convicts in the case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Monday put an interim stay on the execution of two convicts in the gruesome December 16 gangrape-murder case.

The court stayed till further orders the hanging of Vinay Sharma, 21, and Akshay Thakur, 29, on pleas filed by them challenging the Delhi High Court verdict that upheld their conviction and capital punishment.

The court had earlier stayed the execution of two other convicts in the case — Mukesh, 27, and Pawan, 20, after they filed similar pleas against the high court verdict.

An SC bench passed the stay order, saying since the death sentences of other convicts had already been suspended, the same order must be passed in the case of the other two convicts in the same case.
