Second runway soon for Vijayawada airport
VIJAYAWADA: The second runway of the Gannavaram Airport will be laid soon. The Airports Authority of India is seriously considering the proposal and local airport officials have also recommended this due to the increasing number of passengers and the demand for international flights.
The new runway will be laid beside the present runway. As per plans, the runway will be used for domestic services only. The existing runway will be extended from 7,500 feet to 10,000 feet. Officials are planning international flights after expanding the airport. Already they have identified passenger demand to the US and Australia.
At present only six flights are operating from the airport and nearly 600 to 700 passengers travel every day to other parts of the country. All flights are being operated with 90 per cent occupancy rate.
