PM Narendra Modi reaches Brazil; hopes BRICS will have its bank
New Delhi: As he headed for Brazil on Sunday to participate in his first multilateral event, the Brics summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed the hope that the proposal to set up a Brics Bank and create a Contingent Reserve Arrangement will come to fruition.
Mr Modi set forth his expectations from the coming sixth Brics summit to be held over two days (July 15 and 16) in the Brazilian cities of Fortaleza and Brasilia in a pre-departure statement here before he left for Germany on his way to South America.
The statement also indicated the importance that the new government attaches to this multilateral forum, that has Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, besides India.
The PM said: “I look at the Brics summit as an opportunity to discuss with my Brics partners how we can contribute to international efforts to address regional crises, security threats and restore a climate of peace and stability in the world.”
On Sunday evening, Mr Modi’s special aircraft landed at Tegel Airport in Berlin, where he will stop overnight before leaving for Brazil on Monday. The Prime Minister was received by Indian ambassador Vijay Gokhale and senior German officials. The PM’s high-level delegation includes minister of state for finance and commerce Nirmala Sithar-aman, national security adviser A.K. Doval, foreign secretary Sujatha Singh and finance secretary Arvind Mayaram.
Mr Modi said in his statement he also hoped to “further advance intra-Brics economic cooperation and our collective efforts to advance global economic stability and prosperity”.
