Krishna, Godavari projects fail Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad: Telangana and Seemandhra are craving for irrigation waters in the present Kharif season as there are no signs of any significant inflows from any project constructed on Krishna and Godavari.
Farmers and Irrigation officials in both states are hoping for a breakthrough at least by this month end as beyond that there is no guarantee for a full-fledged paddy crop.
Except for the Godavari Delta in Seemandhra, which supplies to 10 lakh acre in East and West Godavari districts where raising of nurseries and transplantation is in progress, the rest of the projects in both the states are now left to their fate with no inflows.
It is estimated that over 50 lakh acres under Krishna, Godavari and Vamsadhara projects in Seemandhra, and over 25 lakh acre under Krishna and Godavari-based projects in Telangana are suffering, besides several thousands of acres under medium and lift irrigation schemes.
If the Kharif season continues to remain erratic, it will be a major loss to both states in terms of food production as well as affecting their revenues to the exchequer.
Right from Almatti and Narayanpur projects on Krishna River and Tungabhadra Dam in Karnataka up to Prakasam Barrage in Krishna district of Seemandhra, almost all the projects are recording nil inflows. The situation is such that both Telangana and AP are depending only on inflows from upstream Karnataka projects.
