Doubts remain over faculty, infrastructure
Hyderabad: Intense pressure from the Central government to increase MBBS seats has led to the final clearance of medical seats in all states.
With this, the number of MBBS seats in the country stands at 40,000, with 3,800 in AP and 2,950 in Telangana.
While the students are happy, the moot point is will the deficiencies of infrastructure and faculty be rectified soon? Both government and private medical colleges have given an undertaking for the same. But, past experiences have shown that they have gone way beyond their deadlines, say experts.
The problem is that the increase in number of students has not guaranteed an increase in the number of professors. Therefore, a class of 250 students continues to be taught by one professor.
A senior professor said, “There are some who do not understand in one go. Hence, visual representations too are required. But, we do not have these facilities.”
But professor of paediatrics, Dr Ramesh Reddy differs. “The compliance report by MCI shows that the colleges will adhere to the deficiencies and rectify them. There are many private medical colleges whose seats have not been increased as they have failed to work on their deficiencies.”
