FAO predicts ‘achche din’ for agriculture

Agriculture to see big growth in coming years

New Delhi: Even while India is staring into drought like situations in many states following poor Monsoon, the world body OECD-FAO in its report for the country has portrayed a bright future ahead for agriculture.

In a report on India, the organisation has claimed that Indian agriculture will robustly grow in the coming years and maintain a stable trade surplus. India’s trade surplus in agriculture was over $20 billion last year.

In a chapter titled “India: Good prospects for rapid agricultural development”, the OECD-FAO claims that in the coming years India will sustain production and consumption growth of food, led in particular by higher value added sectors.

The NDA government on Thursday had unveiled its maiden Union Budget in which agriculture got fair amount of attention with finance minister Arun Jaitely expressing confidence to attain four per cent annual farm growth.

Acknowledging India’s strong farm export, the report noted that India is among the leading exp-orters of agricultural products, with a trade surplus that has grown from $3.6 billion in 2000 to an estimated $22 billion in 2013.
