Gopal Subramanium rejected, Amit Shah’s lawyer elevated as SC judge

Lalit represented Shah in the controversial Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case

Mumbai: Senior lawyer Uday Lalit, who represented newly elected BJP president Amit Shah in two high profile criminal cases, is likely to be elevated as a Supreme Court judge after the Centre rejected Gopal Subramamium last month.

Lalit’s name has been recommended for the top job by a panel led by the Chief Justice of India, as reported by NDTV.

Lalit has represented Shah, a close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the fake encounter case of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati in Gujarat.

Subramanium had accused the government of launching a negative campaign against him in the controversial case.

Shah, a close and controversial aide of Modi, was appointed to the top post in BJP at a meeting of Parliamentary Board where incumbent Rajnath Singh resigned after a tenure of one-and-a-half years.

Sohrabuddin was shot dead by the Gujarat police in 2005, when Amit Shah was the state's home minister. The police, however, falsely claimed that he was a terrorist. Tulsiram Prajapati, a witness to the murder was also killed the following year.
