Row over Rahul Gandhi’s ‘nap’ in House

The shot, picked up on Lok Sabha TV, went viral on social media

NEW DELHI: A video of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi seemingly taking a nap during the debate on price rise in Lok Sabha went viral on Wednesday however it was not clear whether Mr Gandhi was really sleeping.

Mr Gandhi was captured on camera with his eyes shut and his head tilted to the right. The shot, picked up on Lok Sabha TV, went viral on social media.

The Congress jumped to Mr Gandhi’s defence and said he was not sleeping. The BJP, however, seized the opportunity to lash out at the Congress saying “this is what the party had been doing on price rise for the last 10 years”.

“It is not true. I totally and categorically deny all aspersions,” said Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi while lamenting that the matter had been sensationalised.

BJP’s national spokesperson Shanawaz Hussain said: “Congress is never serious on the issue of price rise and that is why Rahul Gandhi became so bored with this discussion that he slept off.”

“First of all this is not a controversy. This is very trivial and frivolous issue which is being unnecessarily highlighted,” said Congress MP Rajiv Shukla.
