Hyderabad: The idea of approaching the State Archives and Research Institute, Tarnaka, to determine the natives of Telangana before 1956 came up when Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandra-sekhar Rao directed officials to explore all possibilities to determine nativity.
Officials of the Social Welfare department have identified nearly 15 types of certificates on 10 subjects that can be taken into consideration to ascertain nativity.
The 15 certificates include Mulki certificates issued in 1956 or tenancy certificates, Nizam pattas or land pattas, tax receipts (water, land), birth/death certificates issued since 1919, Census-1951, voter lists (1952/1957), service registers (for employees), court documents, gram panchayat records and sub-registrar office records.
Of these, voters’ list from 1952, Census-1951 and Nizam-era’s revenue records are available with the institute. The revenue offices at mandal-level have all the land records, which too can be verified to ascertain nativity.
District collectors have informed the government that most of the records prior to 1956 are in the safe custody of various government offices. Director of State Archives and Research Institute Zareena Parveen was not available for comment. The staff at her office informed that she had left for the Secretariat to attend a meeting on the nature and quality of records available with the institute.
