New crematoriums likely in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The GHMC is working on plans to set up crematoriums on the city’s outskirts as the four crematoriums inside the city are drawing a lot of protests from locals.
In February civic officials approached the Ranga Reddy district administration asking for an appropriate site, and a 3-acre plot on the road to Vijayawada has been identified.
The RR district authorities has to hand over the site to the GHMC so that it can start work on the new crematorium. The new facility will be located ahead of the Mount Opera Resort.
At present the GHMC has electric crematoriums at Punjagutta, Amberpet, S.R. Nagar and Bansilalpet. All the four are facing trouble as residents near these facilities are objecting to cremations due to the stink. A senior GHMC official said the centres at Punjagutta, Amberpet and S.R. Nagar were facing protests and that it has hit their operations. Another problem facing the GHMC is the delay in handing over unclai-med bodies by police and the mortuaries. Owing to this reasons, by the time unclaimed bodies are brought to the crematorium, they are highly decomposed. Unclaimed bodies are not released immediately because of medico-legal problems. Besides hospitals and the police do not try to speed up the process.
In a recent resolution passed by the GHMC, the Mayor has allotted each circle Rs 10 lakh, and the cremation of unclaimed bodies will be done by the GHMC itself. The budget includes all material required for last rights.
