Budget 2014: India to increase domestic coal production

The government plans to impasse on coal supplies to power plants before March 2015

New Delhi: Apart from the major announcements at the Budget 2014 session, Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley also proposed development plans for the coal sector of India.

India's coal production was 566 million tonnes in the fiscal year ended March 31, but demand was in the range of 715-720 million. Power generation rose 6 per cent last fiscal year and 4 per cent the previous financial year. The NDA government plans to impasse on coal supplies to power plants before March 2015. The Finance Minister has also promised that quality domestic coal production will be given prime importance.

Optimisation of coal linkages and avoiding unnecessary transportation will also be looked after highlighted the Finance Minister.
