SC dismisses PIL on no liquor shops on highway
The bench asked the petitioner to discuss this issue with his concerned MP
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to direct state governments to ban liquor shops on national highways saying it is for the legislature to enact a law in
this regard.
A bench, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, dismissed a PIL filed by a Chandigarh-based NGO Arrive Safe Society seeking its direction to ban liquor shops on national highways.
The petitioner alleged that due to easy availability of liquor shops on highways cases of drunken driving has increased leading to fatal accidents.
The bench, however, was not impressed and asked the petitioner to approach lawmakers for framing of appropriate law.
"Parliament session is going on. You ask your MP to raise the issue in Parliament. We are not executive court," the bench said.
