People intolerant of graft
Hyderabad: While about 59 per cent of corruption in India arises out of citizens bribing government officials to get their work done, granting public contracts and allocation of mine and mineral leases contribute to a larger chunk with direct involvement of government officials, said Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar.
At a meet here on Monday, he said the new Modi government has taken up new measures to curb corruption through a work manual for public officials, cutting delays, and adapting advanced technology and strategies like e-governance and online tracking.
“Though corruption has existed since ages and has increased several folds in the last few years, the new thing is that people have become intolerant to it. As a result, the high and mighty involved in corruptions are facing the consequences,” said the Central Vigilance Commissioner adding that holding powerful people accountable in recent scams like 2G and CWG had sent a positive message.
“This is a positive development and we are moving towards a rule-based democracy where the law will be uniformly applied to the rich, powerful and ordinary citizens,” Mr Kumar said on the sidelines of the XI anniversary celebrations of Vigilance Study Circle.
He added that times had now changed with people becoming more intolerant towards corruption, which had led to many chief ministers and bigwigs losing their positions.
