Parliament commences budget session from today

Opposition to raise price rise, Gopal Subramanium issues

New Delhi: Parliament commences on Monday and the session, which is of more than a month’s duration, will see the presentation of the Modi government’s maiden Rail and General Budgets, which are expected to give the first substantial impetus to trigger the revival of the sagging Indian economy.

However, there are indications that the Opposition will rake up the issue of price-rise, which is expected to generate a lot of heat.

The other issues on which the Opposition parties are preparing to target the government include the recent controversy over the government rejecting the name of former solicitor general Gopal Subramanium for appointment as a judge of the SC, the rape case controversy surrounding Union minister Nihalchand, and rising incidents of atrocities against women.

A highlight of the proceedings on the opening day is expected to be a statement from external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj in both Houses on the situation of Indians in Iraq.

While the presentation of the Railway Budget is scheduled for July 8, the Economic Survey will be released the next day and the Union Budget for 2014-2015 on July 10.

The issue of the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha could see a confrontation between the government and the Congress.
