Congress isolated on Leader of Opposition issue, may go to court
New Delhi: The Congress is getting isolated on the issue of the Leader of the Opposition’s post in the Lok Sabha, with the non-NDA parties sitting in the Opposition benches like the AIADMK, Trinamul, BJD, Samajwadi Party, Left and even the UPA partners, maintaining silence on whether or not such a post should be given to the Opposition in order to maintain the spirit of healthy parliamentary democracy.
The Congress, which got 44 of the total 543 Lok Sabha seats, has been desperate to get this post and mounting pressure on Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. But its failure to unite the Opposition on this issue has strengthened the government’s argument that if the main Opposition does not have requisite numbers (55 seats) to stake the claim to the post, then why should it be offered to them.
On Sunday, Congress leader Kamal Nath told to a TV channel that if the Speaker rules against the Congress, it would be right and proper for the party to go to the court.
