Three-day heatwave waiting for Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

Heatwaves are often followed by sudden and heavy thunderstorms

Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued yet another three-day heat- wave warning for districts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Heatwaves are often followed by sudden and heavy thunderstorms courtesy the cumulonimbus clouds. However, heavy moisture content in the air is required for these clouds to form. Meteorologists say that a normal year would have strong south-westerly winds, coming from the Arabian Sea and sweeping across the peninsula bringing a lot of moisture and rains. While hot and dry north-westerly winds from Rajasthan and Maharashtra are generally weak.

“This time the north-western hot and dry winds are very strong and making the atmosphere warmer and warmer. Normally winds from the Arabian Sea flowing across the peninsula bring a lot of moisture. But that current is absent this time. North-westerly winds are stronger this time,” Dr Y.K. Reddy, Director, IMD Hyderabad, explained.

The heatwave warning issued by the IMD reads, “Severe heat wave conditions would prevail over some parts in the districts of East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore and Anantapur districts of Andhra Pradesh and Khammam and Nalgonda districts of Telangana.”

The eastern coastal city of Visakhapatnam witnessed formation of some clouds on Saturday but they were also blown away after little rainfall.
Monsoon has also been extremely weak this time with absolutely no build up of the rain bearing clouds so far.

Hyderabad and much of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are reeling under a heat wave in the absence of monsoon rains. Meteorologists say there is a trend reversal this time with stronger hot winds from north-western direction flowing over the state resulting in the heat wave while the south-west winds are weaker. Normally, it is the other way round.
