Police bans public drinking in Hyderabad for a week
Hyderabad: The police has prohibited consumption of liquor in public places in Hyderabad city for a week.
Orders to this effect were issued by city police commissioner M. Mahendar Reddy on Friday.
The order, issued under Section 144 will be in effect from July 5 to July 11, both days inclusive. It may be extended. Violators will be booked.
The order comes after reports of drunkards creating nuisance in several areas of the city, troubling women and children.
The commissioner in an official release said that the police had received reports indicating that consumption of liquor in public places had become rampant in several areas of the city, resulting in problems for the public, especially women and children.
“Though consumption of liquor in public places is already illegal, it is considered necessary to take effective measures to prevent dangers to human life and the safety and security of women and children and for preventing disturbances,” Mr M. Mahendar Reddy said.
Police said there were also reports of people consuming liquor in public and engaging in violence on the streets.
