Jammu: Narendra Modi, who is on his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir as Prime Minister, flagged off a new train from Katra to Delhi via Udhampur. This train will give easier access to one of most popular pilgrimages, Vaishno Devi.

Modi landed in Jammu on Friday and flew by chopper to Katra to flag off the train that will provide direct link to the base town for the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda were also present with him

Abdullah hoped that other rail projects in are also completed soon.

Modi suggested that new train to Katra be named Shreeshakti express.

Jammu's development will never be stalled, said PM allaying fears of the city-dwellers and added that we have to further enhance rail links in Jammu and Kashmir.

Modi further said Jammu and Kashmir has gone through several problems and we want it to be prosperous and peaceful.

Around 50 lakh pilgrims visit the shrine every year.

Meanwhile, separatists had called a strike in protest of Modi’s visit and massive security arrangements were put in place in capital Srinagar and other places.

All shops, business establishments, schools and banks remained closed in the state and little traffic was seen on the roads.

Modi will leave for Srinagar before noon and is scheduled to address Indian army troops at the Badami Bagh Cantonment.
